Larry Roberts photo
OPEN - Featured Speaker: The Internet: Past, Present, and Future
Speaker: Larry Roberts, Chairman, Anagran
Introducer: Mark Spoonauer, LAPTOP Magazine
Abstract:
The Internet has developed rapidly from a tiny experimental network to a dominating world force. Since the first network nodes were deployed in 1969, Internet traffic has grown at an unbelievable rate, doubling every year (on average). Recently it has been reported that people now spend more time on the Internet than watching TV, an amazing milestone when you consider the ubiquity of television. However, the world-wide open structure of the Internet could fragment into many closed networks if security is not greatly improved. That would seriously detract from reaching our original goal of making all the world’s unclassified knowledge instantly available to virtually anyone. Such an event should and can be avoided. I will discuss the changes needed so that we can expand the Internet’s range of applications and maintain its critical growth.
About the Speaker:
Larry Roberts is the founder and chairman of Anagran, a provider of high capacity flow management products.  He is recognized as one of the world's foremost authorities on the Internet and networking. He led the team that designed and developed ARPANET, the world's first major computer packet network, which evolved into the modern Internet. He and three others credited with founding the Internet received the National Academy of Engineering’s 2001 Draper Award, engineering’s highest honor. Roberts holds B.S., M.S., and PhD. degrees from MIT.  He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and has received many awards from technology groups around the world.
About Anagran:
Anagran is a new networking company founded by Internet pioneer Larry Roberts. Its flow-based traffic management products eliminate the potentially crippling effects of network congestion to enable video, voice, data, and wireless traffic to scale economically with flawless quality over converged IP networks. By using Anagram equipment, service providers and enterprises can consistently deliver the highest levels of guaranteed performance and quality while significantly reducing capital equipment and recurring network costs. Information about Anagran can be found at www.anagran.com.

Speaker: Rene Haas, GM Notebook Business Unit, NVIDIA
Introducer: Mark Spoonauer, LAPTOP Magazine
Abstract:
From phone calls to social media; movies to games - a digital evolution is upon us and consumers expect to take their content wherever they go. Not only do they expect to take their content on the go, they also expect their experience on a mobile device will be the same – if not better – than what they have become accustomed to with their desktop. What does that mean for the mobile computing industry? It means mobile devices will need to provide a visually rich experience; video playback will need to be seamless and battery life can never be an issue.

This keynote will explore recent trends of the mobile computing industry as well as insights to what the mobile computing experience will come to mean in the future.
About the Speaker:
Rene Haas has been with NVIDIA since 2006 and manages the Notebook Business Unit. Rene has held various positions in engineering, sales and marketing management for the past 20+ years. He has worked at Texas Instruments, Xerox, NEC and Tensilica prior to joining NVIDIA He received a BS in electrical engineering from Clarkson University.
About NVIDIA:
NVIDIA awakened the world to the power of computer graphics when it invented the GPU in 1999. Since then, it has consistently set new standards in visual computing with breathtaking, interactive graphics available on devices ranging from tablets and portable media players to notebooks and workstations. Speaker: Snow White, Global Professional Learning Manager, Dell
Introducer: Don Ryan, CMB
Abstract:
Today, more than ever before, students are part of a “connected generation” that uses technology to communicate and collaborate with friends, family members, and the world around them. In some communities, students are often asked to disconnect their digital devices upon entering the classroom, while in others, students are becoming more connected as a result of technology introduced in the classroom. In either case, the technology of the digital age brings opportunity to new generations of students by opening a window to the world of knowledge beyond the classroom and helping them develop the skills necessary to prepare and qualify for the competitive nature of college and careers.

Join Snow White as she discusses recent trends in educational technology integration into the teaching and learning environment.
About the Speaker:
Snow White is currently Global Professional Learning Manager at Dell. With Dell since 2003, she helps K12 customers implement technology initiatives in their districts. Top Five Security Considerations of the Netbook
Anyck Turgeon, Crossroads Systems
Course Description:
Netbooks have the same security vulnerabilities as laptops, with the additional greater risk of theft and loss due to their smaller size. Their use on the Internet presents the same threat of malware transmission and data theft as with laptops.

The challenge for enterprises is how to extgend strong security protection and management. Laptop security policies, created before the advent of netbooks, often demand built-in biometric readers that netbooks lack. Persuading corporate security managers to rethink policies will require third parties to fill the biometric gap with new options.

This tutorial provides insight into the netbook security challenge and introduces parts of the solution. Encryption, biometric features, and other security solutions for netbooks and their users will be discussed, along with tools to persuade corporate security executives that netbooks are secure members of the mobile computing team.
Intended Audience:
Microcomputer, PC, computer support, help desk, mobile technology, and desktop managers; CIOs and CISOs; IT, DP, network, security, and computer managers; application developers; product and product marketing managers; marketing specialists; security specialists and engineers; and enterprise computer users.

How do you choose among the many attractive mobile platforms? Who needs what for what purpose and when? Does the well-equipped road warrior or technology junkie need one of each? What are the key features, advantages, and limitations of each platform? Will they all merge in the future of will they remain separate categories? How do they communicate with one another? Does the same software run on all of them or do they have different requirements? These are some of the questions this panel will discuss.

At any given point in time, her small New York City studio apartment is filled with at least five laptops or netbooks along with a collection of cameras and phones. A former editor at LAPTOP Magazine, Joanna took the imaginary throne as Netbook Queen when she was the first journalist in the world to review a netbook powered by Intel's Atom processor. Joanna also likes to appear on camera to talk about the latest technology, and has been featured on ABC News, CNN, CNBC, and in a few LOL-worthy David Pogue New York Times productions.

What will be the major netbook operating systems, processors, and form factors going forward? How much will these devices cost? How large will the actual volumes be? These are some of the questions this panel will discuss.
